Thickening Agents
Thickening agents prevent colors in the art of Ebru from sinking to the bottom of the water and ensure that the colors spread on the water’s surface. These substances increase the viscosity of the water in the Ebru tray, allowing the colors to adhere easily to the paper. Thickening agents are divided into two categories: natural and artificial.
Natural and Artificial Thickening Agents
Natural thickening agents are derived from Astragalus roots or Irish moss (Carrageenan) and are used in powder form. Since preparing sheet tragacanth is labor-intensive, natural substances such as seaweed and powdered tragacanth are more commonly preferred. Carrageenan produces successful results in the art of Ebru and positively affects the appearance of colors.
Synthetic thickening agents are also used, and some artists use materials such as wallpaper paste. However, this method may cause colors to lose their vibrancy and lead to cracks in the patterns.
How to Prepare Thickening Agent (Powdered Tragacanth)?
Since there are different types and qualities of thickening agents, the correct measurements may vary depending on the product. It is generally prepared by mixing it with warm or hot water. For example, 4-5 grams of thickening agent should be added to 1 liter of water and stirred thoroughly until fully dissolved. Allowing the mixture to rest for a few hours improves its dissolution. The prepared thickening solution should be stored in a cool, dark place to prolong its usability.
Ready-to-Use Liquid Thickening Agents
To simplify the preparation process, concentrated liquid thickening agents are also available. These products are diluted with water before use. The recommended dilution ratios are indicated on the product labels.
- 500 ml Concentrated Liquid Thickening Agent: Suitable for small-scale work. It is diluted with a specific amount of water before use. This amount corresponds to 2 liters of standard Ebru water.
- 1 L Concentrated Liquid Thickening Agent: Preferred for medium-scale Ebru work. This product is designed to be diluted with 2-4 liters of water. Exact proportions are provided on the product label.
- 5 L Concentrated Liquid Thickening Agent: Ideal for workshops and large-scale production. It can be mixed with a larger amount of water for extended use. It corresponds to approximately 10-20 liters of Ebru water.
Liquid thickening agents should be thoroughly mixed with water until a homogeneous consistency is achieved and allowed to rest for a few hours. The mixture should be stored in a cool, dark place for long-term usability.
